How to Use: Live Countdowns

A step-by-step guide to using the Live Countdowns with animations or text only. Counts down or up and takes DST changes into account.

Creating a countdown

  1. Select a theme by clicking on the thumbnail.
  2. If you want to give your event a unique name, enter it in the field called Countdown title.

  8. Finally, click Create Countdown.
  9. Save the countdown by creating a bookmark.
  10. Share a link to the countdown by copying the URL and pasting it to your social media account.
  11. Click the menu icon to edit the countdown, show it in fullscreen, switch to the Event Time Announcer, see a text-only version, or watch a demo of your countdown's final seconds.

Saving a countdown

You can save your countdown by saving the URL (web address) that is generated when you make it. For example, you can bookmark the countdown page, add it to your favorites, or you can create a shortcut and place it on your desktop for easy access.

Editing a countdown

To edit a countdown, click the menu symbol on the page showing your countdown and choose Edit.

Deleting a countdown

Since the countdowns you create are not actually saved anywhere, such as a database or a file, and are defined only by the URL (web address), it is actually not possible to delete a countdown once it has been created. If you have posted or otherwise published a link to the countdown, you can delete the post or link. It is also possible to edit the countdown (see How to edit a countdown).

Sharing a countdown

You can share your countdown by sharing a link to it. Simply copy the URL (web address) and paste it into an email or post. The URL contains all the information for your countdown.

FAQ: Countdown

Does the countdown tick down live if I share it on facebook?

No, it is only counting live on our website. Your friends can click on the shared post, which will take them to the live countdown on our site.

I lost my countdown. Is it saved anywhere?

The countdowns are not saved on our servers. You have to save the URL as a bookmark or share it on social media to go back to it. Your browser may remember the URL for countdowns you have created in the past, so it is possible that you can reproduce it by typing https://www.timeanddate.com/countdown/ into your address field. If this doesn't work, just create a new one.

I find a countdown offensive! Please delete it.

We at timeanddate.com do not create the personal messages or names on our online countdowns. Users do this. We also do not save them on our servers and can therefore not delete them. If someone is sharing content which may be offensive, we suggest you take this up with the people who are sharing it.

Can I preview what happens when the countdown reaches zero?

Yes, simply click on the menu symbol on the page showing the countdown and select Demo.

Can I have a live countdown on my desktop?

You can save the countdown as a bookmark or shortcut on your desktop. However, if you want it to watch it count down, you have to have a browser window open and an internet connection.
